SoHo to experience the cobble streets, fashion and art

SoHo represents the area from Houston Street to Canal Street and between Crosby and Sixth Avenue, the name a portmanteau referring to the area being SOuth of HOuston Street. The area was once famous for its booming art scene and artistic community, home to such fixtures as the Mary Boone Gallery and the Gagosian Gallery.Regrettably, the area was hit hard by the economic changes of the 1980s and 1990s and saw a large migration of these artists and galleries to Chelsea and other neighborhoods.Head through SoHo to experience the cobble streets, fashion and art. Meander through the side streets of SoHo between Broadway and West Broadway to catch some of the biggest shopping brands like Zara, J.Crew and Mango, and peak into some of New York's top-line stores to catch some of the latest trends. Some of my personal favorites are Bloomingdales, Acne Studios and COS.When you have done some damage on your wallet, take a stroll down West Broadway and stop into some of the art galleries. In the 1970s, SoHo found itself with many industrial buildings and little industry. These buildings were ideal spaces for artists as they boasted large spaces, natural light, and low rent. The unique atmosphere and energy cultivated a thriving creative scene for artists and art lovers alike.SoHo’s artistic history is rich and diverse. Just a few of the many illustrious artists who contributed to the amazing art culture of SoHo include: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Phillip Glass, Nam June Paik, Donald Judd, Chuck Close, Frank Stella, Vito Acconci, Jon Kessler and Alex Katz.

Before the Revolutionary War, SoHo was initially part of a grant of farmland given to freed slaves, and was the first free Black settlement in Manhattan. The cast-iron architecture featured in approximately 500 SoHo buildings is why the area was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1978.

West Village

Mainly known by tourists as the trendy neighborhood, West Village is called home by many of America's rich and famous. Touted by many new New Yorkers to be the place to live, the historical streets are lined with tall trees, and small mom and pop pubs and shops. This neighborhood has had constant turn over and has recently welcomed more chain restaurants, but you can still find some of my favorite shops on Bleecker Street. Start on 14th Street and start on 14th Street and walk down Hudson Street to reach Bleecker Street.Cut over to Waverly Place and head to original Joe's Coffee Shop. It's a tiny cafe and may have a line, but guarantees a delicious cup of strong coffee that will put some hair on your chest and keep you going the rest of the day. If you find yourself in need of a snack, pick up one of Joe's yummy cranberry currant scones.

  • Fun fact / Local tip
Continue on Waverly Place to Washington Square Park. This park has a ton of history and fun facts, and currently acts as the center of NYU's campus. This Square was once used as farmland given to freed slaves, and later a military parade ground. In 2007 they moved the fountain to be aligned with the arch, and in doing so they found a gravestone and remains under the soil. This lead to an archaeological assessment and the estimation that there are around 20,000 graves underneath Washington Square Park. With each renovation, more history emerges. If you find yourself in need of a meal or a snack around Washington Square Park, drop down to MacDougal Street and peruse the many restaurants that cater to the NYU community – Saigon Shack is a solid favorite that never fails to deliver!

Classic NYC does classic Paris. Lively atmosphere and get mussels and fries, it's a perfect place for lunch and then shopping, or dinner and then dancing.
