Dinner at Felix Austria

While the Germans might not be known for their exotic taste in cuisine, it's still cool to say you've tried the local fare, or at least something a bit fancier than curry wurst and beer. The unpretentious, hearty Austrian food served at Felix Austria is close enough to authentic: expect meaty dishes, good beer, and heaping servings at this cozy family-style restaurant. Veal schnitzel is the house specialty, but there's also meat soup with liver dumplings, goulash, and spaetzle. Come and get warmed up with soup on a cold winter's eve.

You'll also find unique gifts, local fruits and veggies, thrift stores, and all kinds of tasty eateries in this section of Kreuzberg.

Smash Cheap Beers at the Clash

One of the last-standing hidden punk-rocker bars in Berlin. Even though it's smack dab in the middle of a popular street lined with bars and restaurants, this place somehow stays gloriously hard-to-find. Clash is where aging punk rockers smash beers before heading out to absorb grimy techno at some warehouse club. The beer is cheap, the staff is surprisingly friendly, and the atmosphere in the bar is loud and fun.

  • Type
    Art and Culture, Food and Dining, Nightlife
  • Season
    All Year
  • Transportation
    This bar is about a 10-minute walk from Mehringdamm Ubahn, which is accessible via the U6 and U7 lines.
  • Duration
    2.5 hours - 3 hours
  • Energy Level
    Medium
  • Cost Per Person (USD)
    $ 10
  • What to bring
    cash for the bar, tolerance for smoke
  • Fun fact / Local tip
    This graffiti-covered bar sometimes hosts live concerts, plus they have a pool table, pinball machine, even a pet dog: you really can't go wrong. The only down-side is a common one when it comes to Berlin nightlife: the smoking. It's full-force here, so maybe visit on an autumn or summery night, so you can at least take in a bit of fresh air at the beer garden outside.

Dance to Techno at Tresor

Loud techno blasts while blurry bodies dance in a dark, three-story labyrinth: it's perfectly Berlin. This legendary club is housed in a former power plant and spans over several concrete floors until reaching the famed vault, reachable only after making it through a long, narrow tunnel. The music that blasts out of the speakers here ranges from house to experimental techno, and it stays packed all weekend. It's open Thursday-Monday.

  • Type
    Art and Culture, Nightlife
  • Season
    All Year
  • Transportation
    Tresor is on Leibzigerstrasse in Mitte. You can take the U-bahn to the Jannowitzbrücke or Heinrich-Heine-Strasse stops. It's a five-minute walk from there.
  • Duration
    3 hours - 3.5 hours
  • Energy Level
    High
  • Cost Per Person (USD)
    $ 15
  • What to bring
    some cash for the door
  • Fun fact / Local tip
    The clubs in Berlin are known to be tough on you at the door, and this place is no exception. It's understandable: many of these warehouse clubs are legendary for their anti-establishment vibes as much as their hardcore techno. If you want to avoid the wait-in-a-four-hour-line-just-to-be-sent-home-at-the-door-thing (it happens), try your best to look punk, or at least just wear all-black clothing. If you can speak any German and say something meaningful about the DJs playing that night, even better. You just might impress a bouncer enough to let you in. Otherwise, stay stone-cold silent and hope for the best.
