Moving Image Culture @ The JSC Berlin

Take in the art scene of Germany by visiting The Julia Stotscheck Collection near Berlin's neighbourhood, Stadtmitte. The exterior doesn't boast, and it is off the much beaten path of Museum Island nearby, but the interior will fancy your eye. The JULIA STOSCHEK COLLECTION is a private collection of contemporary international art with a focus on time-based media. Founded in 2007, the private collection has its own exhibition building in D√ºsseldorf, with a total of 3,000 sq.m. available for public presentations. I have been to several exhibits there and am always left curious and wanting more. They highlight artists from throughout Europe and the U.S. The collection boasts over 750 works in total! Not to worry though, the flow of the museum feels in now way overwhelming. There are plenty of sitting and viewing areas to take it all in. The building formerly housed the Czech Cultural Center in East Germany, and Johanna Meyer-grohbrügge of Berlin Architects has masterminded the conversion of the premises into a modern exhibition space. Note: They are only open on the weekends with guided tours in English on Saturdays at 3pm. The Museum is simple to commute to.

Feast In The Beauty Of Gendarmenmarkt

Many people consider the Gendarmenmarkt the most beautiful square of Berlin Mitte – if not of all Berlin. First of all the Gendarmenmarkt is a rather large square, located in Mitte, bordered by the streets Französische Strasse, Markgrafenstrasse, Mohrenstrasse and Charlottenstrasse. The square is mostly known for its architectural ensemble dating back to the seventeenth century, including the Concert Hall (Konzerthaus) where you can often catch a concert, the French Cathedral (Französischer Dom) and the German Cathedral (Deutscher Dom) which both have tours for FREE. For only 3 EUR (children 1EUR) you can climb up the 254 steps to the viewing platform on top of the French Cathedral. It's a great way to see the Gendarmenmarkt from a bird perspective. Unless there is a wedding going on, you can climb up daily from 12-4pm (Jan-Feb.) and 10-6pm (Mar-Dec.). Finally, in the center of the square you'll find a monumental statue of Germany's renowned poet Friedrich Schiller. Throughout the year, there are markets and cafes to enjoy, street music and free concerts going on. There is beauty surrounding you 360* and a true European experience. During World War II, many of the buildings surrounding Gendarmenmarkt were either badly damaged or destroyed. The East German / East Berlin government put great efforts into rebuilding the iconic three buildings, which can be seen a stroke of Luck of History, if you consider that lots of other damaged historical buildings were simply torn down in Post War Berlin.

The Square is so beautiful during Christmas season. Germany is known for their Christmas markets, serving Gluhwein, and beautiful gifts. I'm not into big holidays but I can't help but take joy in settings like this:)

Fancy A Show?

Fancy a show in Berlin? While you might usually associate another city like New York for Broadway-esque shows with spectacular sets, music and dance, Berlin proudly boasts the best show of its kind at its very own Friedrichstadt-Palast. You must experience the spectacle! Acrobatic tricks, singers, quality dancers (who happen to be friends of mine!:), costumed by International designers such as Jean Paul Gauthier, and star choreographers brought in by the Artistic Director, Alexandra Georgieva. Reopened in 1984 and located at Friedrichstrasse 107, the show palace lies in the district Berlin-Mitte just five minutes' walk from Friedrichstrasse railway station. The Palast is unique the world over for its diverse programme and sheer size. Grand Shows, children's shows and guest appearances attract 700,000 visitors. Making the Palast by far the number one among the Berlin theatres. With more than 160 participants in every performance, including more than one hundred artists, it is also the largest ensuite show in the world!! My favorite part to take in are the random special talents they feature including giant hoolah hoop work as well as beautiful trapeze. But the true show stopper for me is always the women adorned in the most gorgeously designed costumes. We're talking plumage, colors, sparkles, think Vegas showgirl meets Victoria Secret model;) All while being Family Friendly! The creative team couldn't be more international. They include: Phillip Treacy, the gifted hat maker works for Queen Elizabeth II, European royals, Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld, Ralph Lauren, Lady Gaga and Madonna. The London-based Irish milliner is responsible for design direction and Stefano Canulli (Paris/Rome) for the extravagant costume designs. Las Vegas-based director Krista Monson has produced shows for the Cirque du Soleil; she is assisted by co-director Oliver Hoppmann from Berlin. The stage set is by the American Michael Cotten, who has created shows for Michael Jackson, Miley Cyrus and Phil Collins as well as the Super Bowl and the Olympics. So you know, Revue shows are not musicals. Coherence is primarily achieved through visual imagery rather than narrative storytelling. Meaning they are also perfect for guests with no knowledge of German. Check online for a range of ticket prices from 35euro and up! Shows start usually at 7:30pm and another at 3:30pm on the weekends. Here is a link for their Premiere Show of 2018 titled VIVID!https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=42&v=8HRe2VY2dQs

  • Fun fact / Local tip
Many of the dancers are classically trained. As a professional contemporary ballet dancer myself, I can confidently say that the dancers they choose for the company are supremely talented:)There will be German singing mostly but there is so much brilliant imagery going on that you will definitely be bale to follow the albeit vague storyline.
